Australian director Renee Mao’s beautiful adaptation of artist and musician Amyra Leon’s poem, “The Sound of Drowning.” Featuring Leon and Queen G.C.M.H., Mao follows Leon on her journey being raised in foster care, to taking the stage at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Cinematography by Alex Levin.

A deeply personal and introspective film which grew out of a creative partnership nurtured over years of collaborative, New York based Australian Director Renee Mao’s The Sound of Drowning pairs an original poem written and performed by AMYRA with the Harlem locations which held an emotional significance in her chaotic childhood. Making its online premiere on Directors Notes today, Renee tells DN how she went about crafting an abstract, yet emotionally authentic reflection of León’s artistic voice.
